Unfortunately for our kids, their genetics ain't so good. Bad eyes are pretty much guaranteed and teeth are 50/50. Looks like Kari got the short end of the stick. Bad eyes and bad teeth! She had too many teeth for the amount of space in her head. And that wasn't going to work out for anyone. The plan ended up being that we were going to pull 2 permanent teeth on top and then straighten everything out and line it all up.
We discussed leaving everything in her head, and just using a palate extender, but when the orthodontist did the calculations he felt like it would change her profile too much.
So, first.... we had to get the teeth pulled. She seems pretty happy about getting teeth pulled.
They gave her some gas and numbed everything up really good. I was able to watch and was surprised at how gentle the yanking was... Actually, no yanking. Just strong, gentle pressure.
And then it was over! She looks like a vampire. Or a walrus. But, thankfully, the trauma was limited and pain was pretty much gone in 1 day.
At first, the difference is hard to tell.
But golly those holes look awful.
Almost exactly 1 month later we headed to the orthodontist to get her braces put on. Before!
During:
After!
I tried to be smart about it and had her start taking ibuprofen before we even got there and for a few days after. She actually complained very little and refused to use the wax in order to build callouses.
Here's a little bit closer up so you can see what work they had planned.
This was on her third visit. As you can see, there was already a pretty significant difference.
Since the rest of the post is about Kari, I'll throw these in there too. Here is a fun pic of her and her bestie Ashes :)
And this was the selfie she allowed me to send to the fam for an update.
She rarely lets me take pictures, so I take 'em when I can get 'em!
