Being a somewhat organized person (in that I like to have a place for everything, even if I am not super great at putting it away every time), the girls dressers bugged me. They would stack all their "special" things on top and they would just look cluttered and dusty. We solved Kaitlyn's problem a while back, while adding some wall interest. But Kari's dresser is right under a window, so we didn't have the same options for her. Hubby and I verbally brainstormed adding some long, thin shelves but hadn't actually built them. One day, after getting a bit frustrated and asking Kari to clean off and organize her dresser again, she came downstairs with a drawing of some shelves she thought we could make for her. Hubby, being the creative, building loving person he is, jumped on it! He discussed the design with Kari, got final approval from the head honcho (in case you are wondering, that is me), then he sent Kari up to make some measurements. They refined the design a little bit and then they went out and bought a piece of MDF!
Kari was instrumental in all the help she gave to daddy.
And they even tried out a few new methods with daddy's cool new router.
Then it was "glue up and be patient" time.
Since these were shelves for Kari, she did quite a bit of the work. She filled all the nail holes, sanded the rough spots, and did all of the priming and painting. I asked her to find some clothes she didn't mind getting permanently stained, and she didn't really have any. It needed to be a little bit warm (since this was soooooo long ago), so we borrowed a sweatshirt from Dylan (which explains why it is so short). Then I let her borrow my own personal paint pants (which explains why they puddle on the floor).
Then I sent her out to work. And after about an hour of getting in the corners, spreading the paint, and dipping back and forth, she said to me, the queen of all paint projects in this house, "This is kinda hard work!"
Well duh! Welcome to my world!
Once they had dried for a few days, she was finally ready to "install" them. I wasn't fast enough to get a before picture. But imagine all of this on top....
Since we don't know what her next bedroom could be like (since no, we aren't planning on staying here forever) we didn't want to permanently nail or glue them on top of her dresser. We just used a small piece of felt (to prevent scratches) and put them up on her dresser. In this picture you can also see the kind of space constraints we were dealing with. There is only about 8 inches on either side of the window.
And of course, I didn't get an after picture either. I could technically do it right now, but it would be an AFTER after picture. As in, it has already had the chance to get cluttered and dusty again. I guess new shelves can't solve everything :)
