Power Pole
We had a little bit of excitement around here the other day. The kids could not tear themselves away from it. They were replacing the power directly across the street from us.
Poor kid took it personally. It is a little blurry, but he is pretty visibly upset.
Dat! No! Don't do dat!
Video for proof... (No I don't know why it is funky and off to the side...)
And, while the video was cute for a minute, after the first 5 it got old...

I am Fighting...
... a loosing battle. I keep taking her thumb out, and giving her the pacifier, but she pulls it out, and then finds her thumb again. Never fear, I will keep trying... I have heard such horror stories of breaking the habit, I am willing to keep working on it :)

Tag! You're it....
I blog so my family knows what is going on in our life, and so my friends can get a good dose of my witty sarcasm. Sometimes it works. Aaaaaand sometimes, notsomuch. But, my fabulous-o sister tagged me with this questionnaire, and I figure, what the heck... Maybe my wit and charm will come across as I answer random questions and you get to know me better.... :)
1. If you were an animal, which would you be?
What do you mean if?!?! Technically I am an animal, right? However, if I were to be something other than human, I suppose I would like to be a pet hamster. Cute, cuddly, no natural predators (so long as I stay in my cage), and I can eat all I want ;)
2. If you could have dinner with anyone who would it be? {i know this one is cliche, but i always love to hear people's answers to this!}
I would love to have dinner with ALL of my family right now. You know, the kind of dinner where we all sit around one huge table, yet still all manage to sit right next to each other, talk over each other, joke on each other, spill on each other and laugh with each other... *sigh*
3. What would you say is the flaw in yourself you would most like to correct?
3. What would you say is the flaw in yourself you would most like to correct?
Honestly, I would like to be more motivated. Get more stuff done and stop sitting around the house thinking about it. Not that there isn't a time and place to relax, but I wish I could wake up in the morning and say "Wow! That was a good nights sleep. Now I am gonna do this and this and this and this..." Instead of "If I can just get Kari to school, I can sit down and watch the kids play, and I can do that tomorrow." Maybe, though, that will change as Kelsey gets older and my hormones regulate themselves....
4. Where do you see yourself this time next year?
This time next year I will have my graduated kindergartner and graduated 2nd grader home. About to start summer again. I will have a 4 yr old boy (heaven help me) and a little toddler. I suspect I will be doing much the same thing, except I hope to have the house completed, de-cluttered, and clean.
5. Fill in the blank: When I have an afternoon totally to myself, I like to ______
6. Are you a chocolate or vanilla kind of person?
7. Would you {or have you} ever traveled solo? Would you? Why/why not?
I have a few times in my life. First, when I went to college (I was scared to death). When I went to visit hubby while he was studying abroad (which I was also scared for, because I was landing in Spain and had no way to get in touch with him if something went wrong). And when I flew to NYC for a girly weekend... That one was exhilarating! No kids, and I felt confident enough by then. It was pretty great! We also frequently drive to in-laws, and that is often me, alone in the car, with 4 little ones...
8. Tell me about the best date you ever had.
I don't know if I have had ONE date that is better than others. I like to have some time with hubby without kids, when I can trust whoever the kids are with. Also, having a gift card and/or going to the dollar theater is good for me. I tend to be pretty cheap.
9. Which song has been running through your head lately?
I have had Call Me Maybe, by Carly Rae Jepson stuck in my head. Apparently, I am a sucker for hawt young baseball roadtrip dances. I also have Somebody I Used to Know from Glee in my head... Again, with the hawt young singer :)
10. Did you make any resolutions this year? How are they going?
Nope. There is always something that could be improved upon in my life, so I don't feel the need to start just at the beginning of the year. I would rather try to start when I notice something needs to be changed. That and I am perfect, so nothing needs to be altered... ;)
Well, now you have had the chance to dive deeper into the chasm that is my brain, I hope you can find your way out :)

Brazil
I have a guest speaker today. Not really. I am just sharing an email my dad sent from his travels. Pictures and words come to you from halfway across the world! Thank goodness for the internet. It makes it seem like we are closer together than we really are...
Take it away Dad!
Saudações from Brazil.
The equivalent in Spanish is Saludos from Brazil, literally Salutations from Brazil, or, we would say, simply, greetings! That is about the extent of my Portuguese. It's a somewhat comical process. When I am speaking to someone here who does not speak English, I speak slowly in Spanish, they respond slowly in Portuguese, and, for the most part, after repeats and shoulder shrugs, we get it done. The management team here speaks reasonable English, so the business part is okay. We just have to get by with the rest.
I am staying at the Guest House, a place that mostly sits empty, but which we own and maintain for visitors, because the farm is so remote. It's 3.5 hours or so (depending on traffic) from here to the airport in Brasilia, 1:45 to the nearest city of a reasonable size (small shopping mall, a few decent supermarkets, a handful of hotels, restaurants and a movie theater or two), and 0:45 to the nearest small town (a couple of 7-11 size stores). I prefer to stay here on the farm, rather than commute 1:45 at both ends of the day into the "city." The company pays a lady to (among other duties) keep the place clean and to cook breakfast and dinner for guests. Each room has a private bath, and, all in all, it's hospitable.
Here is a picture of the great room (if you will), which as you can see is principally for eating and for working at my laptop after hours.
It's hard to get an angle on the bedroom, but they look like this....
The sometimes-remote locations of our farms present a continual challenge with
respect to finding appropriately educated people to manage things and to apply
the latest in scientific farming methods. Most folks don't go through their
college years dreaming of life in "the outback." The company stands ready to
invest significant amounts of capital in acquiring good farms in South America.
The only thing slowing the process is human capital. Do any of you know of
trained agronomists, pomologists or edaphologists who are yearning to live (for
a while) in South America?
I have mentioned before that the climate here in Brazil is somewhat jungle like: warm and humid year round, with a wet and a dry season, but not much other seasonal variability. We are well within the tropics, the area between The Tropic of Cancer on the north and The Tropic of Capricorn on the south. Our southern latitude compares to Guatemala City, in Central America, on the north. This is not tropical rainforest. The soils are not great. But it's a reasonable place to grow dry beans, soybeans, corn and sorghum.
The warm, humid climate and extra vegetation (just not good, edible food stock) provide a home to a larger variety of pests than one is accustomed to confronting. To help, here at the guest house, there are 3 cats (outside only). They keep the place pretty well clear of rodents and other small animals. There are also a handful of "free range" chickens running around outside, in the reasonably well kept yard, including a rooster who cock a doodles (apparently something like co-co-ro-co-cooooh in Portuguese and ki-ki-ri-ki-keyyyy in Spanish) each morning.
I asked this morning why there are chickens in the yard. "They are here to help keep the insect and spider populations down. In particular, they like to eat the scorpions."
So, the subject line of this email (which was entitled "Not every "system" is perfect") alludes to the fact that systems can and do fail from time to time. Tonight, as I finished speaking with my (ill) sweetheart via Skype, here's what was a few inches from my foot.

The Blackberry is for scale....
I guess this one just slipped through the security perimeter. In the future I am
going to be a lot more careful about checking my bed before I climb in. (Which made me laugh out loud... Uh yeah. Might wanna do that!!!!)
That was the end of the email. I felt like it was a bit of a cliff hanger, so I responded to find out how the evening came to an end.
And, uh, thanks for the pictures of the scorpion... Not. Did you squish it
before or after you laid down your blackberry?
I chickened out on the scorpion. I put a
drinking glass over it, and was wondering what to do when the security man came
to the back of the guest house to wash his hands in the outside sink. I asked
him to come in, and showed him the scorpion. He ooo’d and ahhh’d appropriately,
and then took off the glass and pushed it around a bit with the toe of his boot
to see if he could show me how they strike (the thing didn’t, I don’t know if
it was asleep or what). Then he squished it with his boot, and graciously swept it up,
brought in a bottle of floor cleaner and made sure the spot was
clean.
Well gee. That was awfully nice of him, wasn't it.... :}

Last Day of School
Today is Kari's last day of school. She technically didn't have to go, but when I asked if she wanted to stay home she said "I just love school so much!" I think she really likes her teacher. Or, she is scared that coming home means she has to be around her siblings and share her toys... Either way, tomorrow it will no longer be an issue ;)
Tuesday was her awards ceremony/graduation. All the first graders were asked to dress in their nice clothes, and Kari picked her new favorite green dress. I asked hubby to go take a picture for me while I held our seats and the baby. There she is, front row, 4th kid from the right.
He came back a little disappointed. Apparently, she followed directions so well, she wouldn't even look at him and give him a direct smile :)
As each child's name was read, they got to go (processional style) to receive a diploma from the principal, and any awards they received were spoken of as they walked. Our little Kari was on the Principal's Honor Roll, which means not only did she get straight A's, but they were all 94's or above! I say this not to brag... OK, maybe just a little bit. But, mostly I am just proud of her, and how hard she worked over the school year.
She went from this:
To this:
At the end of the day today, she will be an official 2nd grader... Yikes!
And, following that logic, her sister will join the ranks of Kindergarten:
What say I make an effort to "help" her pick her clothes for next year....?

Things to Remember
At one point, she was little. So very little. It seems like she has so rapidly grown that I no longer remember these things. This picture is from a month ago, and she is already so different. Also, I love her cute little spread fingers :)
And this picture is from that day when I took pictures of my haircut. We had showered, and she graciously allowed me to take pictures before getting her dressed, etc. (Notice I had already put my hair back).
These are the things I want to remember :)

Cinnamon Rolls
We adopted the tradition from hubby's side of the family of having cinnamon rolls on Sunday morning. They can be considered cheap and, all I really have to do is put them on the pan and stick them in the oven. While they cook, I can continue to get ready to go. Add the difficulty of opening a container of yogurt and a banana and you have a 3 course meal! Plus, it is a kind of special thing, delegated only to Sundays. And, oddly enough, it helps the kids to know they are getting ready to go to church... *shrug* Its the little things.
This particular day, we had all woken from our afternoon naps, and were lounging around before it was time to cook dinner and get ready for the evening. Now, you can look at these picture below, just as they are if you so desire. OR you can follow the subsequent instructions (which I highly recommend).
1) Click on the first picture.
2) When it opens in the separate picture window, click the left/forward arrow.
3) Then click on the back/right arrow.
4) Now do that approximately 100 more times.
You get the picture. ;)

Birthday Party
I'll admit that it might be a little awkward for me to blog about a child's birthday party. Mostly because this child doesn't happen to be my own, though I occasionally borrow her. I like to pretend my last name is Duggar... I am just experimenting. NOT! My children consider her one of their very best friends, and will be so sad when she moves away. Which I have expressly forbidden... I don't think her parents are listening though. Boo.
This little girl's mother... well, she is one in a million. She used to be a teacher (who am I kidding... once a teacher, always a teacher, right?!?! Especially if you are in Primary), and she has some of the most fabulous ideas. For her daughter's princess party they did some really neat-o stuff. First, they all sat down and decorated their own crowns. There were jewels and fuzzy balls galore, and we were soon surrounded by royalty. Then, they made their own castles. (This is where I think she was particularly ingenious) They "built" them with sugar cubes and grey tinted icing (because it was representing mortar... Duh!) The kids each went their own way, and it was pretty awesome to see what they came up with.
The is Kari's crown and castle. She actually came a little bit late, as she had a softball game that afternoon. We skipped out on it because it was so blasted hot, and I was a bit concerned taking little Kelsey out. I like how her crown has some symmetry, and her castle was actually 3D.
This is Dylan's. He focused more on going up than out. Or making any kind of "shape" at all. He originally started with just one "tower" but it kept falling over. Once I introduced him to the second balancing tower, he quickly caught on, and added a third just, for good measure. I didn't get a picture of his crown, but I did get the opportunity to help him. It was mostly just random jewels and fuzzy balls here and there, but it was exactly what he wanted, so I am glad he was happy with it.
Kaitlyn's crown:
I love that she just put as many jewels as she could on it. However, there is evidence of thought as she started at the top and went as far down and sideways as she could.
And poor Kaitlyn's castle. I honestly don't really recall what it looked like before the accident. Unfortunately, there was a somewhat earth shattering earthquake in the hallway on the way home, and the (fairly precariously balanced) plate was knocked to the floor. We swept up the remains, and brought home the ruins.
Oddly enough, we couldn't get most of the children to try even licking the sugar cubes. Even after telling them it was just like candy, we only got 2 of them to bite.... *shrug* Oh well.
Hubby also constructed a castle from leftover sugar cubes, and I will admit his was somewhat impressive. But I guess that is what you get for having a degree in construction. It's like he cheated or something.
The last thing they made was a scepter (which I failed to get pictures of). They each got a pretzel rod that they dipped in colored chocolate melts, and decorated with sprinkles of assorted shapes/sizes/colors. I think it was pretty much a little crafty girl's dream party!!!
I tend to get jealous of people who are creative on their own terms, because while I can copy like a champ, my own feeble brain is not up to the task of coming up with these ideas by myself. So, in conclusion, I would like to say two things. 1) Friends mother: I hate you and your creative self sometimes. 2) I may be copying your ideas. Fair warning :)

Will Power
I have will power. Oh yes. I have tons of will power. Enough for this kid...
And this kid....
And this kid... (who is licking her fingers)
Enough will power to say "No, you may not have another mini powdered donut. 2 is enough."
Kari just stuffed them in her mouth. She didn't want to savor them at all.
Dylan takes my approach a bit more. Little bites, so you get to taste it longer.
Problem is, I use all my will power for them. So, after they are in bed, and it is just me watching my favorite TV show to wind down from all the activities of the day, when it comes to saying "No more. 2 is enough", I just don't seem to have that ability. And the kids wonder why there aren't anymore donuts left in the morning. I suppose it is ok. It is a sacrifice I am willing to make for them. As a mother. I give them all my will power, and am left with none. *Sigh* The things I do for my children!

Haircut
It seems that having children is some kind of time marker for me. Reminds me that I need a hair cut. Or maybe it is something about the hormones that makes me want a change, or that I am tired of dealing with what I have. As it turns out, the last time I got my hair cut was after Dylan was born. And the time before that was right before Kaitlyn was born. I, apparently, only get my hair cut every few years.
Well, it was about that time again. I was getting tired of washing my hair, then pulling strays out of my, um, well, my crack because they got stuck there when I rinsed it out. It doesn't look that long when it is dry, but when it is wet it adds a good 6 inches maybe? So I had my wonderful photographer (AKA Kaitlyn, the almost 5 yr old) take a BEFORE picture for me.
Based on my experience last time, about how curled and short it got, and how I wished it was off my neck, I went a little more conservative this time and told the stylist to only take off about 5-6 inches, instead of lopping of a whopping 10. She did a good job, but I am thinking about going back and cutting more. For one thing, she cut in layers, which at the time sounded like a good idea. The problem is that the bottom of my hair doesn't curl anywhere near as much as the top does, so it looks a bit strange where the layers fall. And... I think I think I might want to go shorter. Anywho, these then, I guess, are the intermediate AFTER pictures... We'll see if I get the guts to go and do it again... For your viewing pleasure:
My hair. Completely down.
Please ignore the multiple chins. I dont know where they came from. They must have grown just for the purpose of this picture. Also, I actually like the curls around my face right now. However, see below for the reason I don't wear my hair like this all the time.
Notice the longer/straighter layers at the bottom. Also notice I am not completely comfortable taking pictures of myself.
I actually don't mind it too much when it looks like this. Problem is: it doesn't look like this. This is what it looks like when it is wet, and still weighted down. As it dries, it not only shrinks up, but it poofs out. So, in a few hours, it no longer resembles this...
It looks a bit more like this....
Or this maybe. Which is not, exactly, the flattering look I was going for.
I look like a somewhat shocking puff ball... If you haven't played with my hair (which is most of you, since I am not a big hair player) you might find it hard to believe. But trust me when I say, that in the 80s, with the big hair and crimping... I would have been the height of fashion.

First Smiles
I love this period. Of course I loved the newborn "All I do is eat, poop, and cuddle" phase too, so what do I know?
However, Kelsey has started to smile and it is pretty fabulous! She still cuddles, so I technically have the best of both worlds, right? :) The first smiles were not exactly smiles... But you could tell she was trying.
And they were so ugly they were cute :)
This video is a bit boring perhaps, because the end is mostly just her looking at me, but, what can I say, that is what a 2 month old does. However, I also caught a smile in the first few seconds, so, watch what you will.
Then, while we were up in VA, I was able to catch a few more. Her technique has gotten a little better since she is a little older.
And she was pretty smitten with her Nana.
Also, can I just say that outfit is pretty much the cutest thing ever... It even has butt ruffles. I love butt ruffles!!!! :)
Happy, smiley baby!
The end.

Holiday Weekend
Hubby and I just passed a pretty major milestone. Last week we hit our 10 year wedding anniversary! Traditionally, we don't get gifts for each other. We usually just go on a date, and then take some kind of trip whenever we get the chance. That is currently the plan for this year also, even if we don't have the place or date nailed down just yet.
This year, hubby was out of town for the actual day, but we were able to celebrate the following day, so it wasn't that big of a deal. After all, once you have been married 10 years, the days just blend into each other ;) My wonderful friends took on the challenge of watching all 4 of my children, and allowed us to go to a movie and dinner afterwards. We caught the 4:30 show of The Avengers, and were pleasantly surprised. The action was pretty good, and the CG blended pretty seamlessly. The best part, however, was the writing. There were several times where we (or at least I) laughed out loud. And one part where the entire audience burst out laughing and clapping.
After the movie, we headed out to the van, where I proceeded to pump (I had provided some frozen milk earlier for Kelsey). I suspect it had something to do with watching the techno movie, but I felt somewhat like a super hero as I hooked up the various tubes, wires, and bottles to provide "super sustenance for all mankind". (This last part must be read in your best superhero announcers voice to get the full effect). While I was pumping, hubby waxed nostalgic about how we used to go on dates on his motorcycle. I pointed out how the particular activity I was currently involved in might look a bit strange on the back of a motorcycle, to which he responded something like "Kids ruin everything.... :)"
Dinner was delicious, and we returned home to our children, and our friends, who had, in fact survived the evening with only one shirt fatality ;) Saturday was busy with softball games and some service, but Sunday morning I awoke to breakfast in bed. When I headed upstairs, this is what greeted me:
Hubby and the children had opted to make Mothers Day more of a party atmosphere, and it made the rest of breakfast pretty great :)
I also wanted to share the card hubby got for me, because I thought it was pretty thoughtful and entirely appropriate:
Life isn't always a fairy tale.
The castle gets messy,
the little peasants sometimes revolt (this part strikes me as particularly funny for some reason),
and we both know your prince isn't always so charming.
But you handle it Royally.
Thanks for making every single day feel like Happy-Ever-After.
Happy Mother's Day to the Queen of our home.
In one weekend I went from a super hero (perhaps my super hero name could be something like Magnificent MilkMan?) to a Queen. I would say that is a pretty good weekend, wouldn't you?
PS- Happy Mother's day to all my mothers out there! You do an awesome job, and the world is a better place for you and your hard work!

Last VA Picture
This is the last picture I have of our trip in VA. The last day it was kinda rainy, and we didn't end up doing anything but hanging out with each other. It was nice to just be around again. I do think it is interesting, though, that at some point in the day, we all had our computers and/or tablets out. Apparently, we can only stand so much of each other at one time ;)

Accent
Today weather.com says the humidity in my area is 90%. Even for the south that is high. I think I just haven't fully developed my gills. Other things that develop in the south are extra syllables.
Enjoy the accent and the pure boy/toddler-ness :)

Random Pictures
I have had these pictures saved for a bit now, and some of them are getting old. I was waiting for something to pull them together, but 1) I haven't been able to come up with anything, and 2) I didn't want to wait anymore :)
I love these first two pictures because they show cute Kelsey, all balled up still...
I guess she is too nervous to let her guard down for even one second, and leave herself unprotected. Probably comes from living in a house with several wrastlers :)
This picture is from when Kelsey was approximately 3 weeks old. She was cuddling with me, and I just love it. I love the big ol' cheeks and the little closed fist. Incidentally, you can see the beginnings of her strawberry on her forehead, but that it isn't as large/bright as it is now.
This particular day the kids were getting ready for bed, and she fell asleep. Knowing it is easier to assist children with both hands, I laid her on Kaitlyn's bed. Then I couldn't resist the picture. Why is it that sleeping babies are so cute? I don't suppose it is because that is pretty much all they do when they are little....?
And lastly, this random picture is of Kaitlyn. I have mentioned her inventive outfits before, but this one was kinda scary to me. The catholic school girl skirt with the go go boots. I couldn't help but imagine when she is 13 and wearing practically the same thing, just with a belly shirt instead.
I am already practicing my "I don't think so" 's

Strawberry picking
While we were up in VA, we also went strawberry picking. We picked almost $50 worth of strawberries (Thanks Pop!!!). That doesn't include the amount that was ingested in the fields. It's a good thing they don't weigh us going in and out :)
Kelsey had a great time too :)
Nana said that strawberry picking pictures tended to include a lot of behinds. I tried to edit those out for you.
We also washed and individually froze a few pounds so that we could take them home with us. Unfortunately, they didn't make it frozen still, and we had to try to figure out a way to eat several pounds of strawberry fairly quickly.
So after we got home, I was introduced to my first smoothie making experience. Ice, vanilla yogurt, a few tablespoons of sugar and lots of semi squishy strawberries later, and it will forever be a breakfast favorite.
Strawberries anyone?
Cheese!
She is such a little ham. And she was also a little shadow. Everywhere Nana or Pop went, so did she.
We had to help The Dyl man a little bit... He thought the green strawberries were more pretty.
I'm telling you, Kelsey really enjoyed her strawberry picking experience :)
Cousin Ashley.
"It's too heaby..."
Well, ok. So here is a bum picture for your viewing pleasure :)
Strawberry picking brings out the thoughtfulness in him :) Such a cute little ponder-er.
While in VA, Kaitlyn also decided to take up acting. Her first role was a bit part in a horror flick entitled "Revenge of the Strawberries".
Expect to see it in early 2013 ;)
