Happy Candy Getting Day!

Although our girls have already been trick or treating twice, today is actually candy day, so I am putting up some cute costume pictures. Kari has been itching to get into her costume for weeks now. She asked which day on the calendar was Halloween, and has been counting down everyday we crossed one off.

We went to the ward's Trunk or Treat earlier in the week. The girls had a ball! Dylan stayed with me at the trunk to hand out candy.

Kari did an excellent job of holding Kaitlyn's hand and dragging, er,
I mean, leading her around :) She is such an excellent big sister.

The girls wore matching white cat costumes. In typical Alabama fashion, the night we went trick or treating it was 75 degrees. Dylan was too hot to wear his hat. I didn't even bother to snap him up....

Dylan is wearing the costume Kaitlyn wore last year.... Remember?

I love this one... He is caught in the act... Red handed!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Making Book

I have mentioned before that Kari is of the creative persuasion. I would have run out of ideas a looooong time ago had it not been for this book. My mom gave it to me, and it has been a lifesaver. I believe (and I am sure she can correct me if I am wrong) that her and a group of friends used it for home school preschool when we were little. I have done a few "lessons" with Kari, that always result in some kind of activity. Therefore, she has dubbed this book "The Making Book." Not because she likes the lessons, but because she likes to have ideas to create. I know, I know it is a bit old. It was copyrighted in 1979, I think. And, if you look at the back cover, you can tell. Hubby says, by looking at the pictures, he can tell it was done by Mormons. I think he is full of it, but the fact that it probably was done by Mormons (women educated at BYU) doesn't help my case.

Check out those fabulous hair styles!

This was from the lesson on families. Each finger is stuffed with a cotton ball, and then Kari drew on faces, hair, clothes, etc. I think, from left to right, it is Dylan, Kari, Mommy, Daddy, and Kaitlyn.
This was from a lesson on shapes. Circles, triangles, rectangles, etc.
And this is a picture of the hat we got from the book. Talking about colors. This is her "Strawberry Hat." Good thing I have people to help me be creative where I am not....

Pumpkins

We really got into the swing of things this year with the pumpkins. First, I bought little ones, and let the girls paint them. They are our centerpiece now.

Then, I had this little kit thingy I got after Halloween last year for, a buck I think. It reminds me quite a bit of a light brite. Kari thought this one was fabulous. Don't mind hubby's grimace. I am sure he enjoys being hit in the fingers with a hammer....

Kari favored the wooden mallet. It didn't have much head weight, so hubby
cheated a bit, and pushed them in when it was Kari's turn. *Please pay no attention to the fact Kari is wearing a Christmas shirt... There is no talking sense into the girl :) *
*Also, please pay no attention to the fact that Kaitlyn is wearing no pants. She refuses to wear them after she wakes up from her afternoon nap...*
And then, there's Dylan.

Just hanging out with a duck bill while the others carve away.
We sat him up so he could see what was going on.

My finished product.
It was called "Rhythm and Boos." Get it?
Kari's cat.
For some reason the light included in the kit was a strobe light. I honestly don't think it was supposed to be, but, I couldn't get it to stop blinking, so I took a short video as to what it looks like in the dark.
Kaitlyn's pumpkin. She didn't carve it, and it was mostly Kari's idea,
but Kaitlyn nodded her head when Kari said so, so it became hers :)

Banded together

I suppose it is a good thing... Let me explain. (I would take a picture, but hubby had to take the camera to work today.) Sometimes the girls get along very well together. Sometimes, they drive each other, and in turn me, nuts. Today seems to be the latter. They can't agree on a game, and every time one wants to do something alone, the other wants to too. I am starting to see the bright side of the day as lunch time, and, more importantly, nap time approaches. Dylan is playing here on the floor while the girls eat at their little table. However, Kaitlyn noticed that Dylan was playing with a toy she has kinda dubbed as hers (even though, technically, it is a baby toy I brought out of the closet for Dylan). She came to take it from her little brother and move it too far away to be in his current range of grasp. Well, she then took to teasing him, by putting it in his hand, and then taking it back out (whether he had grasped it or not). Well, we have the "third time's the charm" rule around here. I asked her politely 3 times to not tease Dylan and return to her chair to eat her lunch. On the third time, after still ignoring me, she got a "pop." By pop, I mean a flip from the index finger and thumb. She immediately burst into tears, and returned to her chair. Here's the cute part. Kari, sitting in her own chair beside Kaitlyn, took it upon herself to comfort her little sister. She held her hand as she explained "Kaitlyn, if you do what mommy asks, you don't get a pop. You gotta listen." At least I know she occasionally listens to me when I lecture her. Anyway, then she said, "You want me to hold your hand while you eat lunch?" Kaitlyn nodded her response, and there they were, banded together against evil, eating goldfish and PBJs...

A little spoiled

Its true. I have felt a bit spoiled these last few weeks to have hubby here. He takes out the trash for me. Holds chill'ens when my hands are full. We get to do fun things together. Or, best yet, but probably most overlooked, actually sleep next to each other. I feel pretty safe in saying the kids are also very much excited that he is home, and eat up whatever time with him they have. Just a few pictures of daddy time.

Oh yeah... And the dog loves it too :)
No personal space at all. Love it!
*Note: Kari covered Daddy with her pink blanket :)
Like father like son....

Pumpkin Patch

As the season that dentists most love fast approaches us, I can't wait for it to be over. You see, last year I visited Old Navy's post-Halloween sale, and found 2 kitty cat costumes for, like, $3. "Great deal!" you say. "Bargain shopper!" some shout. Well, yes. And no. I thought the costumes were super cute, and cheap, so I bought them. However, I failed to take into consideration 2 things. First: Kari has a mind like an elephant. She never forgets things I hide away. And second: The cat costumes are white. So I am scared to let them play in them, lest they get all gross and dirty before we have ever worn them. In conclusion, I can't wait for Halloween to be over so I can let them wear the costumes all they want and not have to worry about what they will look like.

Also, in a bit of Halloween preparation, we went to our local pumpkin patch. Being the housebound and therefore un-weather conscious mom that I sometimes am, I didn't take enough stock of the weather, and it ended up being a bit of a cold trip for the girls. However, they only complained a little; and so far, no one has pneumonia. Just Kidding. But really, no one has pneumonia. (Just thought I would clear that up.) Here are some wonderful pictures of us hanging out with the orange squash. We haven't carved them yet, but rest assured that when we do, you will be the first to know. Or maybe the second. Possibly the third. Aw, forget the numbers and just be happy I am telling you, okay?!?!

This is at the beginning of the trip. Told ya they were a bit cold.
But, those are super cute Halloween shirts :)
Whew! Check out all those orange blobs...
Oh, sorry Dylan. Didn't see you there :)
The super cool wagon the girls were super stoked to ride in.
Notice again, my poor girl apparently freezing to death. I think if she
had run around she would have been warmer... Oh well.
Spider Hay Bale.
At the end of the Hayride. Great picture of the hubby!
Even Dylan got in on the pumpkin action.

And, of course, what Pumpkin Day trip would be complete without a little taste?
See, he likes it!
Hey, those scarecrows look familiar.
And I swear I have seen those Indians before.
Now, this is just getting creepy.
We are a happy orange family :)

Tis the season to eat candy... Fah la la la la, la la la la.

And yes, I see the mosquito bites on his face. You should see his legs. The mosquitoes just love the poor kid. Its genetic :/

10/22/09

Four years ago today, we were blessed. Yes, I say blessed because a horrible accident happened, and through it all we managed to pull together as a family and live to tell the tale. Also, although it was horrible, and I would never wish it upon anyone, if it had to happen, I am grateful for how and when it did.

I am speaking of our little 4 year burn anniversary. We were all going to gather together to carve pumpkins and eat dinner of homemade hamburger and french fries. Kari, being about 9 1/2 months old, was toodling around in the kitchen in a walker while we were making dinner, and managed to get a hold of the cord to the Fry Daddy. To this day, I don't know how she did it. I was literally 3 feet from her. I slipped in the oil, and ended up in the hospital as well. Nana was also burned, but didn't go to the hospital.

I can, only now, begin to feel bad for hubby who was spending the night with Kari in her hospital room, then crossing the street in the morning to check on me in my mine. For 10 days, he was torn between his wife and his daughter, as to who he should spend more time with, or be around for. I was blissfully drugged. I think that was good for several reasons. Firstly, we discovered both Kari's and my own allergy to morphine. Secondly, and I feel most importantly, it helped me get through the feelings of guilt that I couldn't help Kari, the pain, and the worry of how she would recover. I still don't have to relive the feelings that hubby had, that we were alot closer to loosing our daughter than we wanted to think about.

The time came for us to contemplate moving Kari to a hospital which specialized in burn care. Not only that, but the care would be covered (financially) for the rest of her life. I know, I know. It doesn't sound like a hard decision, but it would require us leaving the state, and all the support that hubby's family and the ward had provided to this point, and that was scary to me. They had said because of all the medical equipment they were bringing (the leer jet was a fully equipped ER), there would be room for only one adult on the plane. I was scared to death to attempt to do this on my own, without anyone I knew, and without hubby's help.

We ended up making the decision to leave, me alone. Luckily, however, they said they could take hubby with us, and even flew him back after a few days. We will forever be grateful to the Shriners, not only for the help and support, and medical knowledge they bring to the table, but their willingness to continue with the care until Kari finishes growing.

I would not wish an accident of this proportion on anyone. I can, however, list my blessings thus far:

Firstly, I have been able to understand that it was just that. An accident. I was, truly, within 3 feet of her, and it still happened. I don't blame myself, my mother in law, my hubby, the pumpkins waiting to be carved, or anyone else. Accidents happen, and we were truly blessed the way it ended up.

Secondly, I am glad it happened when it did. Being that Kari was only 9 1/2 months old she won't remember the pain. She won't remember the recovery. She won't remember the trauma. She won't remember any of it. And that is ok with me.

Thirdly, I am grateful it for how it happened. The hot oil and pan fell in front of her. Not on her. Her beautiful face was left unblemished. Her hair and head, without any scars. I know it sounds horribly vain, but as a parent, you only want your child to live a life without pain, whether it be physical or emotional/mental. I think with her bubbly personality, she will weather the gym class changes and the roommate talks with flying colors. And since this is all she has known, it will never be any different.

Would I wish this to happen? Not in a million years. Do I think it is something everyone needs to go through? Absolutely not. Do we seem to have weathered it well? Thus far.

Kari did not make it through unscathed. This is a picture of the graft on her hand as of yesterday. It looks great, and has yet to affect anything she does, from playing on the playground, to writing and coloring. High five for that!

She also has a graft on her chest and thigh. And 2 donor skin sites. But, that is Kari. It always has been Kari, and to this point, always will be Kari. So far she is doing fabulously. We are not out of the woods yet. We could run into issues as she continues to grow. Depending on how she develops and how quickly, we could have to step in and help the grafts conform to her body. And then there is the blessed massage therapy. I feel like we have a good week when we get 5 times a week in. One day, I can only dream she will be old enough to do this herself.

As it stands now, I just can't imagine my life for the past 4 years without this little face. I can only pray that I won't ever have to.

So, to celebrate out little anniversary, it has become our tradition to have hamburgers and french fries for dinner. A little ironic perhaps, but, it helps us to remember the blessings we have, and still have, thanks to many prayers and help from many others. Bon Appetite!

Grocery List

Kari is her grandmother's granddaughter. She loves to "make" things. Daily, she will ask me "Can I make something?" I, for one, am not so good at this. For many reasons. #1 being I am not creative enough to come up with things by myself. I can copy things reasonably well, just not come up with them. #2: once they are made, what do I do with them? They just sit around and clutter things. I am not good at clutter. I regularly go through my stuff and de-clutter. Probably at least once a month. I am not kidding. So, when we "make" things, they sit on her dresser for a few days until I can quietly sneak them off to the trash. Actually, I usually hide them for a day or two before I throw them away. Then I know I am safe. And then, I throw it away in the trash can in my bathroom where she can't find it, see it, and want to make it again... #3: Then, because I threw it away, I feel like I am wasting money... Dang if it isn't a vicious cycle. Anyway, she wanted to make this little crafty thing we did last year but I didn't have the right ingredients. She went right over to my grocery list, and wrote it on there, lest I forget. See if you can guess what it is.

Just practicing

Hubby has been in town for the last 2 weeks. It has been fabulous to have him around again. Also, I have been a bit spoiled. Although I don't like going to the grocery store at 9pm, I do like going without 3 children. With hubby home at night, I no longer have to go to the store between feeding times, nap times, grumpy times, etc. I just don't get my relaxing time at night to just sit and stare at the wall. I am thinking it is maybe an even trade...

Because I was alone, I found some Halloween makeup for the girls. I brought it home thinking I would just put it away until we needed it. Well, I didn't put it away. They found it. And, although I had every opportunity to take care of this before hand, I didn't. So, we had a little practice run with the make up. Cute kits... I mean kids :)

Up Close and Personal

It was supposed to be a video of him doing his oooh noise (which he does do for just a second). But mostly he just molests the camera. Cute kid :)

Shriek! Gigglegiggle.... Run, Run, Run.

These are the lovely sounds we hear when daddy is home. The girls love to play with him. They love to wrastle with him. They love to treat him like a human jungle gym. See:
Its a good thing daddy can handle things himself. :)
On this particular evening, they started wrastling, but quickly proceeded to long distance pillow hurling. Note, if you please, the terrorizing, competitive face of Kaitlyn.
I love this one, even closer up. Her wind swept hair. The pillow ready for attack.
The face of a truly scary opponent.
Doah. Foiled by the almighty Daddy. Well, at least she is still smiling :)
For some reason, on this night, throwing pillows turned into a
game of (my closest guess) fetch for Kaitlyn.
Good ol' Daddy always plays along :)
And then, it morphs once more into a throw and catch game. I know, one day, when
they are older, I am going to kick myself for letting them throw things in the house.
Probably mostly I am going to kick myself for letting hubby throw things in the house,
but that is a whole 'nother ball game.
I'm ready to catch daddy....
Well, maybe not. I love how the pillow is hitting her, and her hands aren't even up :)
Trying again. Note the pillow in the top of the frame. Also, note her closed eyes. Yeah... This girl has a mad set of pillow catching skills. I also love Kari's face. :)
Kari's turn.
I think she caught it. I also love the pillow flying through the air.
WATCH OUT KAITLYN!!!
This picture is of Kari being hit right in the head. Good times.
Oops... Missed it.
Ready. Aim....
Caught it!
They love their daddy :)
