When Kaitlyn was in 5th grade, her librarian invited Kaitlyn to compete in the Battle of the Books. The students read 7-10 books that they wouldn't normally read. Then they would compete in a game show style question and answer session about the books. Kaitlyn's team decided to divide the books out a bit, so that each student only read a few, but that there was overlap in case one student forgot something. Her battle happened to be the Friday after my last final and the day we celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. But I could actually go watch her in between other things! I sat at the back of the library, observing. Once the questions were asked, the students could confer with one another on the answers.
All the students who participated that year. Several of the girls were her teammates for the Academic Bowl for Beta Club.
And guess what? Kaitlyn's team won!
They got a gift card to spend on.... more books!
This was an excellent activity for my girl who likes to read. Like, a lot. She even said that some of the books weren't that bad :)
